La Substance du Design

Centre Pompidou
The Patrick Jouin exhibition – The substance of design, taking place at the Pompidou center, produced in tight collaboration with his team designer, highlighting the methodology of a work by presenting  projects through  iconic material and visual platforms of the studio's work, created ten years from now by Patrick Jouin.

Patrick Jouin’s choice focused on about twenty projects selected among the most representative of the diversity and eclecticism that the studio cultivates in terms of design. For each project, the entirety of the research and développement process is presented, explained. The objective is to allow the visitors to understand the richness and complexity of the conception of an industrial or artisanal object, whatever its size or function.

A personal, transversal, interpretation of design is showcased to us, resolutely polyphonic and contemporary. It notably renews the hanging and presentation of works while considering the research process, the finished product and the relation to the object all at the same time.
The scenography device aims to create a setting favorable to the immersion of the visitors in the life and story of the studio'sprojects. Blending real and virtual éléments, the layout tends to present crossed looks between the creator, the manufacturers and the users, shaping itself in the form of an illustrated narrative. The course privileges a certain order, starting with a filmed story and ends with the objects presentation.

Both devices complete each other to offer a playful and didactic experience to the public :
The first is located in the center of the room. It is a chair rail on which is projected a film produced by Alain Fleischer. Patrick Jouin introduces himself in person in the exhibition, with his collaborators and other stakeholders, the Professor Damien Léger, sleep specialist, the kitchen chef Alain Ducasse… To present in an original and living form the story and the elaboration process of the objects displayed in the adjacent display cases.

The visitors therefore witness a personal presentation of the objects they will be able to inspect afterwards.
The second, like sensitive skin, takes the shape of a large material library, half illusion, half real. On the shelf is traced the genesis of each object. The visitor can discover the entire design process of the studio, and the eclecticism of the research (material samples, prototypes, etc.) necessary to a project’s culmination.

The archiving device blending print and object starts from the outside of the room, in the museum space.
